Go gently

This song goes out for my cat Oliver, who died yesterday after sharing two decades of life with me.

Oliver as a kitten in BostonI first found him, a starving and flea-ridden kitten, on the back streets of Boston when I lived in that city, naming him after Oliver Twist because he was always hungry. He grew up into a big, strong, blustery fellow, affectionate and fearless -- even after our move to the Arizona desert, where he learned to give wary berth to coyotes and watch out for bobcats and snakes.

At the age of seven, he developed a cancerous growth in his ear. I was poor; friends said, "Look he's had a good life." But his was a life that I held in my hands, a sacred responsibility, so I emptied my bank account for an operation to give him a little more time. Reader, he lived to the age of twenty. Best money I ever spent.

He was tough, my dear boy. He loved his life, and his home, and me, and I loved him. I will miss him forever. Go gently, Oliver. Go gently, old friend.

Really sorry to hear about your cat. Mine are both 7 and I hope I have they both make it to 20. Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage though :)

I'm so sorry to hear this.

I love that song.

Oh dear. He was a good cat.

I'm so sorry. Oliver was a lovely cat.

I have a cat nearing 20 myself. I'll miss my little old man when he goes. May Oliver bask in an eternal pool of sunlight.

Terri, I am so very sorry for your loss of Oliver.

The song had me teary about my own cat that passed this month last year. So very hard, but they are always with you.

We were sorry to hear about your cat. You must be very sad. We had a good cat too, but he's now under a willow tree in the garden. After a while, you can remember and smile. Love from Emma and Angela

P.S. We like your art and your website, and both enjoyed The Wood Wife - Angela keeps reading it when she's miserable, and has read it 5 times! (She's not really that miserable...)

I am very sorry for your loss. My Pye Kitty was with me from 1980 to 2000. I understand how difficult it is.

Dear Terri,
A smile and a tear - congratulations on your marriage and condolences or your loss.

Ahh, how sad.. I love that song, and it made me teary to think of Oliver whilst Kate sang.
Thoughts xx

I'm so sorry about Oliver. I looked forward to being reacquainted with him every winter. That first year, Oliver and I hung out together a lot--both of us hiding out from the dog or watching the owls from afar or admiring the sunset together. I will miss his company!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss! I have been married for nearly 20 years. I cannot imagine losing the companionship of a beloved pet that had been in my life for that long. The song is a beautiful tribute. I listened to some of her music this weekend as I was trolling around You Tube. Beautiful. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Oliver frolics endlessly, and waits for you. He will have much to say when next you meet.

I hope you don't mind an intrusion by a stranger. I don't generally leave comments for people I don't know when it comes to personal matters, but the song and the pictures of Oliver really touched me. I am always moved by stories of pets and saddened when I hear they have moved on. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I'm very saddened to hear about my dear Ollie-Wart. He and I shared a special bond once upon a time, and for that I am truly grateful. xoxo

Such a babe he was. Gone off to visit lost friends, hasn't he. Maybe he'll send you messages from some of them. And of course, he'll get to be a kitten again. Here are some tears and some giggles just for Oliver and Terri.
